Lara's Foundation, 4 December 2012
Lara was a dedicated and inspirational TESOL teacher, teaching English to non native speakers from across the world.
Lara's Foundation was set up in memory of Lara Jones by her mother Carolyn, a former colleague of Cherie’s at the Africa Justice Foundation. Lara was a dedicated and inspirational TESOL teacher, teaching English to non native speakers from across the world. Lara, who had travelled through many South American countries, expressed her desire to open a school there. Tragically, this year, at the age of just 26, Lara had here life taken from her and was deprived of this opportunity. Lara's aim and now that of her Foundation, is to help people of low to no income learn English
English Language is the second most widely spoken language in the world and the leading language of international discourse. It is widely learned as a second language and used as an official language of the European Union and many Commonwealth countries, as well as in many world organisations.
The ability to communicate in English greatly enhances an individual’s employment opportunities; however, tuition is expensive and not available to many South American Nationals. Lara's Foundation's provides the opportunity to access high quality EFL tuition to those who are unable to access it themselves. Their first country is Colombia, where it is mandatory for schools to teach at least four hours of English per week, but there are few English teachers within the public sector. To be accepted to university, a student must have passed English exams at a high standard, but only 4% of students in Colombia get in. At Lara’s Foundation’s chosen school, only 15% go to university.
This tuition will be delivered by British Council approved establishments and for individuals who already have a high standard of English Language ability they are able to facilitate DELTA training. This will enable the scholars to teach English and also teach others to teach English, in their own country, and thus accelerate English Language capacity in their own communities.
Lara’s Foundation currently collaborate with EC London, where Lara taught English, and University College London where Lara graduated BA (hons) Linguistics and DELTA.
Careful selection of scholarship candidates will ensure that not only the individual scholar, but the family and community will benefit by accelerating English acquisition, enhancing employment opportunities and ultimately increasing income and improving quality of life.
