No Peace Without Justice, 18 October 2012
No Peace Without Justice and the Radical Party welcome the deposit of a Resolution that universally bans Female Genital Mutilation as a violation of Human Rights within the United Nations.
The International Coalition Ban FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) announced a draft resolution presented by the African Group to globally ban all the traditional practices with damaging effects on women’s and girls’ lives, with an emphasis on Female Genital Mutilation, which is considered a violation of fundamental human rights. The resolution has been deposited for discussion within the Social, Humanitarian, Cultural Affairs Committee, often referred to as the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly.
Arab and African anti mutilation activists have fought with courage and determination to guarantee a future for the next generations free from female genital mutilation. Their campaign has been supported by parliamentarians and representatives of governments.
This is the beginning of a long process that will hopefully result in the adoption of the resolution by the General Assembly in December, and an international community that condemns female genital mutilation as a crime that should be prosecuted at a global level.
