The Asian Women of Achievement Awards, which takes place annually in London, applauds and celebrates the commitment, dedication and determination of Asian women from all over the country and from all walks of life.
The awards recognise all levels of achievement made by Asian women in the UK, whether professional or personal, within the commercial, professional, artistic and humanitarian sectors. These awards have achieved a huge amount by raising public awareness of the achievements of Asian women in the United Kingdom.
Created by Pinky Lilani OBE and developed with Caspian Media, the awards are held in association with RBS, led by Chris Sullivan, Chief Executive, Corporate Banking Division, RBS.
This year Cherie presented the AWA Entrepreneur award to Sipra Deb, director, The Play Arena. The Play Arena is Sheffield's largest and most innovative indoor play centre, created by molecular biologist Sipra Deb. Her vision is to improve the whole experience of family entertainment centres in the UK. Sipra set up the business 18 months ago and it has since exceeded all forecasts. With a strong drive and passion for developing her staff, Sipra is now involved in supporting several small ventures run by ethnic minorities and by women.
"All the nominees last night had such energy and determination - and they get better each year. It reinforces for me why I'm so committed to helping budding women entrepreneurs in the developing world. Because it's not just in the UK that you can find women with such talent and potential. There are thousands of women around the world who can do just as well, if they are given the right help and training" - Cherie Blair.
