With Fekadu Senbete
Cherie met four women peacemakers who each movingly described their activities in various fields of conflict.
Cherie was invited to return to the University of San Diego School of Law to give the Annual Jane Ellen Bergman Memorial Lecture which is sponsored by the Joan B Kroc School of Peace Studies.
She also took the opportunity to meet students and members of the academic staff .
Following a working lunch with members of the Faculty and guests she met four women peacemakers.
They each movingly described their activities in various fields of conflict. The opportunity at San Diego to take a step back to exchange views, receive support and re-energize was universally welcomed. They were finding, eight days in, exploring what they had achieved and what they hoped to do in the future emotionally testing but rewarding; part of the course requires them to record their past work every day for an hour.
Cherie then met a group of LLM students and others, many from Eastern Europe. An animated session of Questions and Answers probed Cherie's background in the law; her views on legal cases, her Foundation for Women and the legal cases that had won her particular recognition. She also discussed her present work including her work as a mediator and international arbitrator.
She then met Fekadu Senbete who finishes his course as an Africa Justice Foundation Scholar later this year to return to the Ministry of Justice in Ethiopia. He mentioned he had found the start of his course difficult being away from home and family, although there is a large Ethiopian community in San Diego which had supported him, but was full of praise for the help USD had given him and for the opportunity that the AJF had offered. He gained a lot of new legal experience which he is keen to put into practice in Ethiopia.
