The Prime Minister HE Sheikh Hasina spoke of the importance of women's education

Cherie, as Chancellor of the Asian University for Women paid a flying visit to Bangladesh to join the Prime Minister HE Sheikh Hasina, to lay the foundation stone for the new campus in Chittagong. Other dignitaries present included Foreign Minister HE Dipu Mohni, Minister of Education HE Nujrul Islam Nahud, and Managing Director of the World Bank Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala together with members of the diplomatic service, local community and business leaders, and students from the Asian University for Women were also present.

The Prime Minister spoke of the importance of women's education and her personal support for the mission of the AUW and its role as a regional centre of girls' education. She spoke too of her governments proposed Women Development Policy for the welfare of the country's women. She said that a certain quarter "trading in religion" has been trying to mislead the people by misinterpreting the proposed Women Development Policy, although Islam as a religion never approves inequality between man and woman.
