The achievements of so many women in Team GB in Beijing will I hope encourage more girls to take up sport.
"As a big fan of the Olympics, I count myself very lucky to have had the chance to travel to Beijing to see the Games. It was a fantastic occasion with wonderful sport made all the more memorable by the performance - the best for a century - of the British team.
And what made this even better was the fact that so many women were among the star performers of Team GB. The hope is that their success will encourage more girls to take up sport and follow in their footsteps.
The achievements of the British team together with some electrifying sporting moments have created real excitement that the Games are coming to London in 2012.
And what a brilliant performance by our Paralympic team who came second in the medals tables. I was sorry to miss the Paralympics this year, as I'm a huge supporter and managed to get to the Paralympics in Athens and to the Paralympic World Cup in Manchester. The focus is always on what the athletes can do, not what they can't do. But many of them have had to overcome the most tremendous obstacles to become medal winners at the Olympics, or even to get to the Olympics at all, so in some ways I think they are the greatest athletes of all.
Team GB has certainly done us proud."
