The Basketball Match at the Aspire Stadium
With Ade Adepitan and Sharon Collins representing Scope
"Removing the physical, attitudinal and cultural barriers that prevent anyone from taking part in sport and leisure activities, is crucial to realising every disabled person's human rights." Cherie Blair
In 2008, for the third year running, Cherie Blair represented Scope at the Annual International Forum on children with disabilities, hosted by HH Sheikha Mozah of Qatar. The Forum takes place at the Shafallah Centre in Doha, a state of the art facility for children with special needs. The theme this year was 'Sport and Ability - Eradicating Disablism'.
Mrs Blair took part in a presentation to the Forum, along with Sharon Collins, Executive Director of Services at Scope and Deborah Johnson, Paralympic Gold Medallist and supporter of Scope. The following evening Mrs Blair attended a Sports Federation Wheelchair Basketball match at the Aspire Stadium, followed by a dinner where both she and Ade Adeptian MBE, the broadcaster and UK Paralympic Athlete spoke. Mrs Blair emphasised how sports can provide an outlet for people, including the disabled, and bind countries together.
