In acknowledgement of her long standing support for the national domestic violence charity Refuge amongst other services to women's issues and charity in the UK and overseas, Cherie Blair received a CBE in the New Year honours.
Sandra Horley, CBE, chief executive of Refuge says:
"Refuge patron, Cherie Blair, has been awarded a CBE for her services to women's issues and charity in the New Year honours. Cherie is a champion for women's rights and Refuge is delighted that she has received recognition for her work.
Cherie first became aware of the reality of domestic violence as a young barrister representing abused women. In 1995 she became a trustee of Refuge and when she stepped down in 2004 she became a patron.
Over the years Cherie has supported numerous Refuge awareness raising campaigns and her fundraising support has been tremendous. We are deeply appreciative of Cherie's continuing support of Refuge amidst unrelenting demands on her time and her contribution has been vital."
