Dr. Fahima Aziz, Vice Chancellor of the Asian University for Women, has been named the 2011-2012 recipient of the University of Minnesota's Applied Economics Department Outstanding Alumni Award. Dr. Aziz received her PhD from the University of Minnesota before going on to chair the Departments of Management and Economics at Hamline University, also in Minnesota, for ten years. She left Hamline in order to join the Asian University for Women earlier this year, in May, 2012.
Dr. Aziz was informed of her selection by her former colleague and Head of the Applied Economics Department, Professor Brian Buhr. Dr. Buhr noted that the decision was based on her "tremendous record" of "significant and long lasting contributions in applied economics." The Outstanding Alumni Award is given to alumni who make exceptional contributions in industry, the public sector, or academic fields, as Dr. Aziz has done. The nominating committee praised her commitment to excellence in teaching, and to the ideals of the Applied Economics Department and the University of Minnesota as a whole, evidenced in such achievements as her Endowed Alkire Chair in International Business at Hamline University, her leadership of Hamline's environmental studies program, and of course, her Vice Chancellorship at AUW. They noted that her work as AUW's Vice Chancellor in particular provided an impetus for the nomination, and that they were pleased that the timing of the award coincided with this new endeavor in Dr. Aziz's impressive career.
Informing Dr. Aziz of this honor, her former colleague spoke warmly of the "vicarious pride" that her alma mater takes in her accomplishments--a pride that AUW, as her new academic home, enthusiastically shares. The Outstanding Alumni Award will be presented at the Applied Economics Department's Centennial Celebration on September 21, 2012. The award ceremony will be part of a roster of events celebrating the department's 100th anniversary, including seminars by faculty, students and alumni on current topics, as well as a dinner reception, and Dr. Aziz hopes to travel to Minnesota for the occasion.
